happy wednesday! what a better way to celebrate the middle of the week than with a wine post?! i am so excited to share with you all a little bit about Beaujolais Nouveau. i’m not going to lie the first time i ever heard of it was in an episode of sex and the city when samantha jones describes a bad situation as “like getting a bad bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau the first day of season”. once i started getting more and more into wine i remembered that scene and of course had to google it.
turns out Beaujolais Nouveau is released at the same time each year. dating all the way back to the 1900’s parties were thrown for the midnight releases of Beaujolais. a wine worth throwing a party over? sign me up. i brought a 2015 Beaujolais-Villages and the 2016 release to my friend annettes for a little happy hour celebration. since we were going to dinner i brought some light snacks to pair with it. (i just don’t drink on an empty stomach). we had fun tasting the differences between the two bottles. the way the wine tastes has a lot to do with the region (which is constant) but the weather in that region (constantly changing). the hot and cold temperatures really affect the sugar content in the grapes which alters the taste of the wine. as does a dry or wet season. that is what makes each vintage special and unique.
we really enjoyed the Beaujolais Nouveau because it seemed to us like a “relaxed wine” it was a light fruity red that didn’t demand to be taken so seriously. you can have fun with it. the best part is it’s super affordable typically priced under $15 which in my opinion makes a great hostess gift or fun bottle to bring to a party. we finished our glass (and that entire loaf of bread) before heading out for some dinner. for all my local friends i have seen this wine available at GB Russos and Family Fare/D&W stores. once you do find it though it is meant to be drank fairly soon it’s not meant to be a cellar saver so pop it open and enjoy!
