the sun is FINALLY out and it’s somewhat warm again but i’m still going to the gym in the morning. i like the way the treadmill tracks miles.
although i am ready to get outside and start getting dirty. i think that gardening has so many good health benefits for us. it gets you outside, it gets you active outside, you grow things that are good for you. i could go on forever baby.
today let’s focus on that. let’s focus on the health benefits of gardening shall we? since we have a little over/under a month before we start planting outdoors?
for me, the number one benefit of gardening is stress relief. it’s methodical and quiet and you are working to make something grow from something so tiny. i don’t like to have music or headphones on when i garden because i like that time to have my head clear and quiet. i come up with some of my best ideas when i’m gardening in the quiet. in the summer when it gets really hot, i love gardening in the early morning before i get ready for work. it gears me up for the day.
another personal benefit is that as adults we are (in my opinion) given the opportunity to learn something new. i love that each season i learn something new about what i’m doing outside. wither it’s soil alteration, feeding, pruning, a new vegetable type. i love that i have the opportunity to learn a new skill and technique. (and that i’m not graded on it)
in addition to mental benefits there are studies that show a lot of health benefits. one study i read said that a decent amount of fresh air helps kids with adhd and leads some students to receive higher test scores (source). studies have also suggested it can reduce heart disease and increase life expectancy.
i have major plans for big time garden this year but last year (and in previous years) i had two beds to work with and between that and container gardens i managed to grow a sizable garden with lots of amazing produce and flowers.
another great garden resource that i love to use is growveg.com for $25 a year they help you plan your garden and suggest companion and succession planting for you. it’s quite amazing and i use it every year.
what are some natural stress relievers that you do around the house?0
