i’m a gifter. i LOVE giving people gifts. i love starting early and finding just right thing for them. i love finding unique and interesting one of a kind gifts. i love watching the receivers face when they open the gift that i have so lovingly found, wrapped and given. one of my favorite things about the holiday season is watching the expressions on my nieces and nephews faces when they open the gifts from me. even more so than i like opening my own gifts.
i understand how it’s easy to get caught up in the commercialism of christmas. i’ve seen trees packed and packed and packed with gifts that will most likely be used for a month or two and then tossed aside. i’m not talking about giving my child that kind of gifts (although i can see how it’s SO HARD not to). i’m talking about simple gift giving. is the fear of over indulging and clutter worth not giving your children gifts all together?
i want to be clear here. a gift is a gift. no matter if it’s a bag of diamonds or a bag of crayons. gift giving should be thoughtful, intentional and meaningful.
there is a big movement i’ve noticed in the parenting sphere and i’m new to this (4 months in) about minimalism and simplicity but does that mean … no gifts at christmas?
so i guess what i’m getting at is for me, here is why i am giving my child gifts at christmas and why i feel it’s important to do so.
i want otto to have a giving heart. i want him to grow up wanting to give to others. i want him to be thoughtful, kind and intentional. how can i expect that from him when he does not see that from me? when i give ottos gifts i want him to know that it’s because his mom took time, put thought into it, and wanted to give with a giving heart to him. i believe that gift giving to others is good practice in giving thanks to God for what we have.
christmas is not about over indulgence, going into major credit card debt buying things you cannot afford. christmas is about peace, love and giving. giving thanks to God for another year, celebrating the birth of Jesus, and having a giving and thankful heart. giving gifts is a tool to teach thankfulness.0
