we are spending a few days alone in napa this week and it honestly feels like just yesterday we were here. our first trip was about 7 years ago and we visited with my in laws and the last trip to wine country was about 3 years ago. we were burnt out, depressed and needed an escape from reality. we had gone through a winter with a miscarriage and we had just lost joe’s grandpa the first day in to our trip. it was one of those moments where we just sat back and wondered what the heck is going on. what are we doing. but honestly that last trip was one of the most memorable for joe and i because we spent our three days cruising around wine country, top down in our vw bug looking at the scenery, drinking the wine, eating the food and just really refocusing ourselves. it was a trip that is still in both of our hearts and one that we have wanted to recreate since the moment we left.

however this time here we are heading out leaving a precious two year old at home. had i known what was in store for us in the years to come after that trip… i don’t know what I would have done but i am pretty sure that God knew we were going to need that time to cling to when the dark days coming up reared their ugly head.

The past few days we’ve been here in california have been truly magical. We have met some incredible people while exploring and have developed an even deeper love for this region. Yesterday at a tasting room we met an older couple who lost everything in the paradise fires. they were slowly making their way back to the wine clubs they had joined to pick up the stalled shipments because there was no home to ship them to. i was amazed at how they could humbly laugh about the things they had lost in the fire. baby pictures, cash, memories. W (is what I’ll call him) said now there is nothing left for his kids to fight over. his wife and i talked about gardening and how resilient plants are. even after the fire her perennial bulbs were starting to pop up. gardening gives hope. i really loved that.

we are heading out for our final day in wine country and then driving in tomorrow after breakfast to spend the day in san francisco. we have reservations at the same restaurant we ate at 10 years ago on our honeymoon. I don’t know what is a bigger accomplishment, being married 10 years or being a restaurant and staying open for over 10 years.

we’ve had a wonderful time and are soaking in every minute but i know that with each moment that passes it brings me closer to being home with that baby of ours.

i surprisingly packed pretty light for this trip and managed to fit half a week of winter clothes and half a week of summer clothes into one underweight suitcase. the strategy is layers. pack a dress, a sweater and universal shoes like mules to go with each outfit. as much as i hate how chilly michigan has been this spring i did splurge on this anthropologie lobster sweater when i saw it pop up in the new arrivals feed. it’s a nice lightweight weave that is a bit breathable. i’m obsessed with anything nautical so naturally i had to scoop it up. i ordered both a large and a medium in this sweater and ended up keeping the medium. it’s perfect for the mornings when it’s just a tad too cold for no jacket. anthropologie is also having a tag sale too but the only thing i’ve pulled the trigger on is a pots and pans rack for pentwater. i think that is called both responsible and personal growth.
