finally friday sheep shearing edition

Farm & Garden

September 23, 2016

so it’s friday and i’m actually for once a little chilly. I get used to these 80 degree summer/fall days and when i finally give in and wear summer clothes still it’s cold. what gives? i’m not complaining though. i love this weather. i am officially ready for fall. this weekend is pretty jam packed but i’m hoping to squeeze in a few fall activities.

last night we headed out to virtue ciders thursday night market because they were having sheep shearing instructions and demonstrations. being sheep farmers ourselves and knowing what our sheep looked like after the last time we sheared them… we figured it was a good time to go learn some tips and tricks.

it was pretty intense Tommy was able to shear each sheep in about two minutes using a method he learned that doesn’t use strength or aggression to the sheep, it’s all one fluid and flowing movement using the natural pressure points of the sheep. needless to say we were very impressed. considering ours didn’t get their butts shaved. because…. we couldn’t get to their butts without them making a run for it. the sheep that were being sheared last night were our sheeps parents and farleys siblings. it was pretty cool to see how they all compare.

after the demonstration we grabbed a cider and chatted about sheep and goats and asked a few more questions because we are going to give it one more go ourselves before our sheep hopefully start lambing in the spring.

after we hung out and listened to some music, drank our cider, we headed to salt of the earth for a glass of wine and a salad before heading home.

tonight we have a big night. two of pals are tying the knot in  a quiet outdoor ceremony. we are going to head north for that after work and it’s probably going to be a late night. i love a good wedding.

tomorrow morning i’m helping out at the shop in the morning then going to try and sneak off to my pal Heidi’s pop up shop at west elm in grand rapids (11-3pm breton village mall area) then going to hit up a few sales in hopes of finding some furniture then meeting up with liz and lisa and the crew to head to our shop gal zabreas wedding at night.

sunday morning waking up bright and early and hitting up allegan to do some shopping for the house and then i’m hoping in the afternoon to start drying some seeds and meal prep for the week. maybe even make a couple jars of apple butter from my neighbors apples.

hope everyone has an awesome weekend!
