Plaid Free People Top

i did something when i was in new york. i went to gucci. i wasn’t going to do any harm i was just having a few hours to myself in new york city and was just browsing. i went to the location in soho and was just stunned. the colors, the design, the velvet and texture, the associates decked out head to toe in gucci. here i was a midwest gal with sheep inside the most beautiful boutique i’ve ever been to. it was a bit of a pretty woman moment (minus the sex working and plastic boots and that weird denim spandex thing). ok so maybe that isn’t a good reference. maybe just “out of place” would be better. but as out of place as i was, i didn’t feel like i didn’t belong. like we were all a bunch of creative misfits inside this beautiful velvet and studded four walls. that’s when i found the belt. i’m a big style reader on line . more so now that people style watch is out of print. but i’ve seen this belt floating around the internet and was loving how it went with everything from ball gowns to plaid shirts.

my time in new york was short, sweet and technically for a conference so i didn’t have a ton of time to explore. however,  while i was sitting in a cafe by myself in downtown eating a delightful piece of quiche i thought to myself that the abby three years ago would have extended and stayed in the city an entire week. the now abby thought 3 days was just enough and couldn’t wait to get back to her farm and open spaces. nobody constantly bumping in to you. it was fun but i was ready to be home near the open air farmers markets and of course my family. i did do a bit of shopping. two things actually. my belt and my plaid shirt. i can never resist a good plaid shirt.

this one is from free people and just when i thought free people was getting a little too music festival for me i saw this one on the mannequin in the window. now i thought to myself, abby… you just bought a belt. an expensive belt no less. do you really neeeeeed this plaid shirt. and then i thought to myself again, abby you bought the belt to go with a plaid shirt. you just took a bunch of stuff to the consignment store… surely one plaid shirt could just fold right up in to your carry on. so carry on i did.

this shirt is the perfect length. it’s not long enough to wear with leggings. note: i’m not a leggings as pants kind of gal. but it’s perfect tucked in to a pair of higher waisted jeans. i won these jeans at an event with jbandme and i’m obsessed. i now have three pairs of agolde brand jeans. they run small so i went up a size. they do not stretch much so make sure you buy them how you like them to fit. i hate it when jeans stretch out too much but these held their shape nicely. for reference i took a medium in the top and a 31 in the jeans.

i would love to keep my sweaters and long sleeves out but alas michigan has decided to creep back up in to the 80s for the next few days around here. i’m hoping to take  advantage of this weather and clean up the garden and get it ready for fall. i’m still picking tomatoes and cucumbers if you can believe it. but soon enough i’ll be back in my plaid!
